Hidden mobile phone charges: THE FACTS |
Source: TerminateTheRate.Org
When you call a friend on a different mobile network, or call their mobile from your landline, their network will charge your operator a fee for carrying the call.
This is called a Mobile Termination Rate or MTR and is currently charged at around 4.7p or more for every minute of the call.
The billions of minutes for which this fee is charged adds up to billions of pounds for UK consumers every year.
We think Mobile Termination Rates are excessive and distort competition. So we want the industry regulator, Ofcom, to lower the rate to reflect actual costs.

Right now, you're losing money without even knowing it. Mobile operators can charge around 5p per minute, to connect calls to anyone on a different mobile network, or from a landline to any mobile. It's called the Mobile Termination Rate and we know that a fair price is around a penny or less.
Up to 80% of the price per minute of a call from a landline to a mobile goes straight to the mobile operator. The service doesn't get any better and your call doesn't become more interesting. It's money for nothing, which is probably why most of the mobile networks don't want to talk about it.
And although 5p a minute might not sound a lot, it soon adds up. Last year UK mobile operators charged over £750 million just for phoning a mobile from a landline. That's over £60 million per month or over £2 million per day. And incredibly, it's legal.
Fortunately, you can help change things. The regulator, Ofcom, is reviewing these charges, and there's a good chance that if enough of us complain about them, they'll be cut down.
